Beauty and the Beast
Beauty and the Beast was our big project of the year. As both and actor and a tech worker, my time working on the actual set was limited because of rehearsal time. But I spent as much time as i could on it. I would spend my 4th, 5th and 7th periods working on building the castle and on Wednesdays I didn't have rehearsal, I would say until 6.
I've never built anything so big as the set for beauty and the beast which included the Castle, 2 Houses, a balcony, a well, a library, and a road of platforms that went out into the audience. My specific jobs that I was given was building the road of platforms. I, along with Daphne and sometimes Natasha, custom drew each platform and they cut out each one with the jigsaw. We then build a base and legged them. We had to build 9 platforms, and depending on the speed we worked, each platform took about a day to make. When it came time to rehearse on the platforms, I was terrified. The idea of performing a can can on something that I had made seemed doubtful. But they were stable. We had a cast of 40 students all jump on those platforms at the same time and nothing broke. It took us a month to make that walkway, and it came down in 1 hour after the show ended.
In addition to the walkway, I also built the village well. In order to save wood the entire well was made of scrap wood. The circular base was actually two pieces of plywood instead of one solid one. And the doughnut center was 8 small cutouts instead of an actual doughnut. At the time it all seemed tedious but after it was built I saw why I had been told to build it the way I did. We saved wood (which is a really big thing believe it or not) and the well looked adorable. After the production I was allowed to keep the entire thing since it was unlikely we would be able to use the scrap pieces for anything else. I have it sitting in my backyard now.
After those main things, I had little odd jobs of building here and there but nothing big. I'm very proud of everything I accomplished in tech this year.
